The BNO080 / 085 is a 9-axis system-in-package (SiP) designed for rapid development of sensor-enabled augmented reality (AR), virtual reality (VR), robotics, and IoT devices. It integrates high-performance accelerometers, magnetometers, and gyroscopes with a low-power 32-bit ARM M0+ MCU in a compact package. Hillcrest's Freespace sensor hub software is pre-integrated on the BNO080 / 085 to deliver advanced 9-axis and 6-axis motion tracking. The BNO080 / 085 provides application-specific configuration, functionality, and performance in a small turnkey assembly, helping reduce time-to-market, development time, and costs while delivering high accuracy and reliability. This VR IMU features the BNO080 IMU, which combines a 3-axis accelerometer, gyroscope, and magnetometer with an ARM M0+ processor running sophisticated sensor fusion algorithms. The BNO080 Inertial Measurement Unit (IMU) produces precise rotation vector outputs, ideal for VR and heading applications, with static rotation errors of 2 degrees or less. All sensor data is fused and drift-corrected to provide meaningful, accurate motion information. The IC is designed for integration into mobile and embedded systems, capable of handling complex calculations required for virtual reality applications. Sensor data is accessible via an I2C-based library that provides rotation vectors, acceleration, gyroscope, and magnetometer readings, step count, activity classification (e.g., walking, cycling), and calibration status. A demo processing application is available to demonstrate how the IMU’s motion data, including quaternion output, can be used to accurately manipulate 3D objects. In addition to I2C, the sensor supports SPI and UART communication interfaces. For UART connections, compatibility with standard serial interfaces is supported. This version includes an onboard 32 kHz crystal for improved timing precision and more accurate timestamps.
