Next, test the finder by turning it on using the small rotary control on the side. Look through the hole at the front of the finder and you should see the red dot. Use the rotary control to adjust the brightness, which also functions as the on/off switch. Now set up your telescope as normal, but attach the red dot finder instead of the standard optical finder. Point your telescope at a distant object such as a TV aerial or chimney – any small, distinct object at a distance works well. Using a low power eyepiece (25mm is ideal), locate the object by adjusting your telescope and bring it into focus. Use the slow motion controls on the mount to center the object in your eyepiece. Adjust the red dot finder so that the red dot is precisely aligned with the object. Use the two adjustment wheels: the one on the front right adjusts left/right, and the one on the back bottom adjusts up/down. Turn the finder off and wait until dark. To use, turn on the finder and look through the viewing window, aligning the red dot with your intended target. When the red dot is centered on the star or planet, it should appear in the center of your eyepiece view. Remember to turn off the finder after use to conserve battery life.
